Tofu doesn’t have to be bland or rubbery. With a few simple tricks, it can turn into one of the most delicious plant-based protein sources.
Instead of cutting the tofu into cubes, tearing it into rough pieces creates more uneven edges that become wonderfully crispy when fryed. Briefly boiling the tofu in salted water improves its texture and helps it absorb the marinade better. A little starch adds the final touch, creating a beautifully golden crust.
Ingredients
1 block firm tofu
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp maple syrup
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp paprika powder
2 tsp cornstarch (or other starch)
Salted water for boiling
A little oil for frying
Instructions
1. Tear the tofu block into bite-sized pieces instead of cutting it. The rough edges will help create a crispier texture.
2. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the tofu pieces and cook for about 4–5 minutes. Drain well.
3. Place the tofu in a bowl and add soy sauce, olive oil, maple syrup, garlic powder, and paprika powder. Mix well so all pieces are coated. For the best flavor, let it marinate for about 1 hour (optional but recommended).
4. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the tofu and gently toss until evenly coated.
5. Pan method: Heat a little oil in a skillet and fry the tofu over medium-high heat until crispy and golden.
6. Oven method: Bake at 200°C (400°F) until crispy, about 25–30 minutes, turning once halfway.
